What Is A Drug Intervention & What Use Is It?

Many people, despite their liking of mainstream movies, don't actually know what a drug addiction intervention is. People often laugh when they find out that a drug intervention is best described by watching a movie with a character suffering from long term drug addiction, however the reality is that the movies have got the drug intervention process seemingly correct.

In this article, we will go over the traditional and common stages of a drug addiction intervention, so that you know exactly what to expect if you are considering such a form of treatment for someone you know who is currently addicted to drugs.

Initial Stages of a Drug Intervention

The first part of a drug intervention can be broken down in to three parts:

  • Decision
  • Planning
  • Research

The first step, if an intervention is something you are looking at achieving, is to decide that this is the right action to take. Many people will respond differently to such a form of action, for example - some will go peacefully, and others will put up a fight. If the person you know who has a drug addiction has a history of violence, you may want to seek professional help before making the decision to intervene yourself.

Once the decision has been made, the next step is planning. During the planning stage, you'll want to work out how and when the intervention will be carried out. Who else will be present? When will it take place? How are you going to proceed after the intervention itself has taken place? All of these questions need to be answered before proceeding.

Finally, research needs to be done. After an intervention, the drug addiction victim will be taken away to rehab (this is the point of an intervention). Research which centre you will send them to, and discuss your plans with the staff at the centre.

Executing the Drug Addiction Intervention

Following the preparation, you are now ready to execute the drug intervention. Follow you plan through and through, and ensure that every last detail is carried out. This way, there is very little room for anything to go wrong.

It is always best to have another support person (or even a group of support people) on hand to assist, should anything not go to plan.
