The Effects of a Drug Addiction on Society

It is a well known fact these days that drug addictions have a massive impact on society. There are a number of reasons for this, and in this article, we will take a look at the fundamental concepts which lead to societal harm, as a result of drug and alcohol addictions.

The chances are that you know someone who has a drug addiction problem at the moment, or has had such an issue in the past. Did it adversely affect you? Probably not - unless you were very close to that person. However, what you probably didn't see was the adverse effect that this person was having on society as a whole. These effects are much more subtle in nature, but certainly build up after a period of exposure to a particular drug addiction.

Behaviour Effects on Society

One of the most obvious negative effects that a person's drug addiction can have on society is their volatile and unpredictable behaviour patterns. Basically, when the person is high on drugs, or the level of alcohol they have consumed is great enough, the behaviour becomes irrational and thoughtless. It is a proven fact that the following adverse societal effects occur whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs:

• Increase in violence and violent crimes.
• Increase in sexual crimes.
• Huge increase in petty crimes (graffiti, etc)

It is a scientifically proven fact that people are more likely to offend and break the law whilst under the influence of drugs and alcohol than at any other time.

Financial Effects on Society

In addition to the adverse behaviours displayed above, there are also a number of financial effects on society, as a result of a person's drug addiction.

The main ways that society is negatively affected are:

• Higher medical expenses and costs.
• Higher expenditure on public assets (due to petty crimes)
• More money being illegally traded.

This third point is exceptionally important. Drug addictions result in underground and undercover transactions, which ultimately put drug money in the wrong hands. This starves society of much needed additional income, and creates a black market where transactions are covered up and kept secret.

Hence, ultimately, it is in everyone's best interests to ensure that a drug addiction is rapidly treated and fixed, so that these adverse effects can be limited at all times.
